The Match AltaSea campaign for three AltaSea partners – Friends of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Los Angeles Maritime Institute and PortTech LA – was an overwhelming success.

Sam Nappi, AltaSea’s Board Chairman, matched the first $57,000 in donations.

Mr. Nappi’s original challenge was to match $25,000, with a goal of reaching  $50,000 in total donations. However, that goal was reached in only two days, leading him to increase his match to $50,000.  Due to the continued fast pace of donations, the second match was exceeded within seven days. Mr. Nappi then generously increased his match to $57,000.

Together with the hard work of our community partners, we ended up raising over $183,000 for  youth education programs. Here’s how the donations came in:

  • Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium received $111,859 to support youth STEAM-and STEM-based education programs.
  • Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) received $66,526 in support of the Reef Check Student Ocean Scientist program where students perform hands-on citizen science in waters around Los Angeles.
  • PortTech LA received $2,870 for students to attend PortTechEXPO 2016 where they receive hands-on STEM-based learning, learn about emerging clean technologies and explore possible career paths with entrepreneurs and maritime business leaders.
  • An additional $2,600 will be divided equally among the three organizations.

Thank you for helping make a difference – not only in the lives of youth who will benefit from these programs, but in the future of our ocean.
