About Ocean STEM

AltaSea’s Ocean STEM offers students a voice in supporting Los Angeles as the center of the Blue Economy, an initiative to protect the ecosystem of the ocean and turn to it as a resource for solving challenges such as climate change, energy supply, and food security.

This multifaceted approach provides online educational resources; encourages students towards jobs in the Blue Economy; and increases youth access to arts and culture.

Boats, Cranes, Trucks, and Trains Children’s Book

Follow container friends Connie and Conner on a typical container route, beginning by ship from Taiwan to the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, then by train to Chicago, and back around the world to Taiwan. Join them on their adventures with ocean wildlife, massive cranes, trucks, and trains, as they deliver basketball shoes and soccer balls to stores!

The shipping industry and the global supply chain have been gaining public interest. Created by the University of Southern California Sea Grant, this book helps educators and parents explain the complicated global process to their children with gorgeous watercolor illustrations and fun, interactive text.

Room to Read

Room to Read’s STEAM-Powered Careers collection presents 10 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics-themed books to inspire first through third graders about the wide variety of groundbreaking and exciting STEAM careers that they can start exploring right now. Created in collaboration with scientists, staff and faculty from the University of Southern California (USC), the collection explores topics ranging from polar science to gastroenterology to nanotechnology and more.

Blue Robotics

Blue Tech Academy is a modular and customizable program that explores the intersection of marine sciences and blue technology. Students will get to work with tools like underwater robots, drop cams, ocean sensors, and autonomous boats, as they explore their local waters.

The ATLAS Project

The ATLAS Project framework consists of three core principles:
