Catalyzing the creation of relevant new industries, AltaSea will support new and existing businesses that commercialize scientific breakthroughs and emerging technologies to create ocean-related products and services.
Companies collaborating in the Research and Business Hub will foster job creation, leading to healthy economies.
The Research and Business Hub at AltaSea will nurture new and established companies that will take advantage of AltaSea’s unique access to the deep ocean to produce innovative ocean- and technology-related products, services and jobs in Los Angeles. By collaborating across hubs and clusters, these businesses will help create economic opportunities for future generations.
Working together, these businesses will create a marine-based “Silicon Valley” to advance the development of products, services and jobs in areas such as ocean robotics, algae fuels, aquaculture and wave energy. The Research and Business Hub will also be an ocean-inspired think tank where the brightest scientists, entrepreneurs and academics can collaborate in developing nature-inspired technologies that will sustainably provide for basic human needs such as food and energy.

Catalina Sea Ranch is AltaSea’s first business partner. The company established the first offshore shellfish ranch in US federal waters and has secured a permit from the US Corps of Engineers to establish an aquaculture facility on the San Pedro shelf off the coast of Los Angeles.
Catalina Sea Ranch will start by growing mussels on 100 acres and expects to have its first harvest in December, 2016.
AltaSea’s Research and Business Hub will be located in Warehouses 58 – 60, which will house all permitted uses. These three warehouses totaling 180,000 square feet were built by the Los Angeles Harbor Department between 1914 and 1917 to house key components of the state’s transit system.
