AltaSea’s College Corps Fellows (AltaSea)

College Corps is designed to help low-income students pay for college while gaining valuable career experience. Students working for free, provided they receive college credit, has long been viewed as an inevitability–particularly for the non-profit sector and small, community-based organizations that do not have the budget to fund interns. Because of this, students who have to rely on loans or paid employment to support themselves through college often miss out on career-building internship experiences.

The Start-ups taking on climate change by extracting caron dioxide from the sea (chemistryworld.com)

At AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles in California, two barges filled with tanks and pipework provide an unlikely setting to open up a new frontier to tackle the climate crisis. The start-ups running them are part of a growing effort to harness the power of the ocean to capture carbon dioxide from the air.

The ocean is a massive carbon sink, having absorbed around 30% of the carbon dioxide we’ve pumped into the atmosphere. Marine life is already paying a terrible price for the resulting changes in ocean chemistry though. Carbon dioxide reacts with seawater forming carbonic acid, which in turn dissociates into bicarbonate and hydrogen ions. The more dissolved carbon dioxide, the more positively charged hydrogen ions. This results in increased acidity that in turn can dissolve the shells and skeletons of sea creatures.

Seawater plant will capture 10 tons of CO2 and make 300 kg of H2 per day (Equatic.tech)

After successful pilot programs, UCLA has partnered with Singapore’s national water agency and others to build the world’s largest ocean-based carbon dioxide removal plant capable of removing 3,650 metric tons (8,046,873 lb) of the greenhouse gas per year while producing 105 metric tons (231,000 lb) of carbon-negative hydrogen.

Scientists Confirm Underwater Mountains Harbor Abundant Life Off Chile’s Coast (schmidtocean.org)

During the expedition, scientists used an underwater robot, capable of descending to depths of 4,500 meters, to collect data from ten seamounts that will be used to advance Chile’s marine protection efforts. The scientists found that each seamount hosted distinct ecosystems, many of which are vulnerable, including thriving deep-sea coral reefs and sponge gardens. The scientists are analyzing the physiology and genetics of the specimens they suspect are new to science to confirm if they are new species.

For decades, a graveyard of corroding barrels has littered the seafloor just off the coast of Los Angeles. It was out of sight, out of mind — a not-so-secret secret that haunted the marine environment until a team of researchers came across them with an advanced underwater camera.

Speculation abounded as to what these mysterious barrels might contain. Startling amounts of DDT near the barrels pointed to a little-known history of toxic pollution from what was once the largest DDT manufacturer in the nation, but federal regulators recently determined that the manufacturer had not bothered with barrels. If you flip on a light switch in Massachusetts right now, there’s a chance that some of the electrons are coming from the state’s first offshore wind project, Vineyard Wind.

While power has been flowing intermittently from the project into the New England grid since early January, its developers announced Thursday that five turbines are fully commissioned and up and running. Together, these turbines can generate 68 megawatts of clean electricity, which is enough to power 30,000 homes and businesses.

USC Sea Grant Program is excited to announce five new research projects that we have recommended for funding and are just pending final approval by NOAA. The projects will have duration of two years (2024-2026). USC Sea Grant’s “Urban Ocean” research program supports projects directed at solving the particular problems associated with urbanization on and adjacent to the coastal zone. The program’s overall aims are to foster the use of sound scientific information to advance our understanding of coastal and ocean resources, to examine the ways we conserve and use these resources, and to support tools for evaluating the issues and socio-economic trade-offs that comprise coastal decision-making.

Texas A&M University at Galveston is reducing fees for current and future out-of-state students seeking a merchant mariner license from the Texas A&M Maritime Academy following approval of a new regional fee structure by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.
