Who Inspired You In 2023? (AltaSea)

Although the daily headlines from near and far can seem perpetually pessimistic, this past year has been one of progress and inspiration at AltaSea that inspires us to believe our future is bright (and blue!). So when a reporter asked me “who inspired you in 2023?” I was able to offer several great examples, all based right here at AltaSea.

Captura looks back at 2023 (Capturacorp.com)

As 2023 draws to a close, Captura reflects on a remarkable year of growth, strategic collaborations, partnerships, pilot expansions, and recognition for our pioneering efforts in ocean-based carbon removal technology. We are proud to end the year with a major milestone; our 100-ton-per-year ocean carbon removal system at AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles is successfully operating end-to-end and capturing excess CO2 from the ocean. Using our Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) technology, this is our second operating pilot system!

The success of our 100-ton-per-year system lays the groundwork for large-scale commercialization and highlights the rapid progress Captura is making toward being a global climate solution. We thank SoCalGas for the funding of our pilot– it has been instrumental to the success of our pilot program and our efforts to scale up our technology so it can make a meaningful impact on the climate challenge.

Marine conservation technology hub rises from old L.A. wharf (news.mongabay.com)

Ports are considered lifelines of our economy, accounting for 75% of world trade (over 90% by tonnage), but generally not thought of as incubators to solve the climate crisis or protect ocean health. That may have changed several years ago when the Port of Los Angeles gave a 50-year lease to an aging wharf called City Dock No. 1 to AltaSea.

AltaSea is a non-profit project founded in 2014 that in less than 10 years has become a leading ‘blue economy’ ocean research hub focused on renewable energy, sustainable aquaculture and other blue technologies.

Open House: Sustainable Surf – EcoByRy

February 24, 2024 (10:00am – 12:30pm)

In traditional surfboard manufacturing, there is approximately double the finished surfboard’s weight in waste (or trash) generated in the production process. This consists of materials from offcuts of fiberglass cloth or tech materials like basalt patches, tape, resin, gloves, stir sticks, foam dust, sandpaper, and more.

So, they’ve been developing the surfboard industry’s first Circular Manufacturing system to close the loop on production waste! In early 2018 Ryan launched our ZERO WASTE INITIATIVE. Waste streams from all production rooms are categorized, then sorted. Eps blank offcuts are sent directly to Marko Foam where they are recycled. The rest of the manufacturing waste was upcycled and recycled into sustainable lifestyle products.

Scientists Study Shipwrecks to Understand Underwater Ecology (noaa.gov)

From large sailing vessels to small dinghies or rafts, wrecked vessels provide artificial structure and materials that are starkly different from the surrounding ecosystem. Scientists have found that shipwrecks offer valuable ecological resources by becoming homes for a wide variety of organisms, from tiny microbes to large marine creatures. Microorganisms, algae, and invertebrates like corals and sponges grow on submerged debris and materials. Small fish and mobile crustaceans often find shelter in the crevices of the sunken material, and larger baitfish and predators use shipwrecks as feeding grounds and rest stops as they swim from one place to another. While shipwrecks can act as “biodiversity hotspots”, they can also harbor invasive species, cause damage to existing habitat in the surrounding area, or carry harmful cargo, such as oil.

Seaweed: Should we be eating more of it? (bbc.com)

Have you ever wondered why your homemade ice cream is covered in ice crystals, but shop-bought ice cream isn’t? Or how onion rings are all the same size and taste like onion all the way around, when actual onions get smaller at the ends? Or how the beer you’d forgotten about still has a head on it half an hour later?

It’s all thanks to seaweed extract, otherwise known as alginate, a natural fibre found in sea kelp, says Jeffrey Pearson, a professor of molecular physiology at Newcastle University in the UK.

The Effect of Marine Heatwaves on Corals (Oceansciencetechnology.com)

The report, published in the journal Science, found that these changes, which trace back to the early 1980s when mass coral bleaching was first observed, strongly correlate with rising sea surface temperatures and climate cycles such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

In 2023, extreme marine heatwaves (MHWs) engulfed much of the eastern tropical Pacific and wider Caribbean. Many Caribbean reefs experienced historically high heat stress that started much earlier (one-to-two months) and were sustained for much longer than normal.

Derek Manzello, Ph.D., coordinator of NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch program in College Park, Maryland, said; “Nearly all coral reef regions in the wider Caribbean, including Florida, were exposed to more than double the amount of heat stress that is expected to elicit mortality.

CRC gathers scientists to share research on improving the sustainability, adaptability, availability and nutrition profile of seafood (globalseafood.org)

Sustainability and climate change impacts are top-of-mind for everyone in the food industry. But the food itself – the nutrients contained therein – is equally important.

That was the key message delivered during the recent Thinking About the Future of Food webinar, hosted by Australia’s Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).

A series of presenters focused on the future sustainability of aquaculture and fisheries and ways to improve seafood nutrition and accessibility while adapting and mitigating climate impacts.

Seaweed design: Kelpy commodities (qz.com)

Consumerism but make it seaweed.

It was 2019, London, a starting line arranged along the Thames. And as red-faced racers sprinted and stretched through the course, a crew of sideliners offered relief in a petit package: rather than plastic water bottles or paper cups, drinks were dispensed in palm-sized pods. The clear capsules were edible, biodegradable, a grab-and-go alternative to landfill fodder. And they came courtesy of seaweed.

Slick, slimy seaweed isn’t just being reimagined for the running class. Macroalgae, as some might say, is having a moment among those interested in countering climate change.

On offshore wind farms, seafood production may be a breeze (Europa.eu)

Called “multiuse”, it involves the sharing of offshore space and is a big departure from the usual idea of exclusive operating rights.

‘Traditionally, most things are done separately,’ said Alex Ziemba, a researcher at Deltares, a Dutch institute specialized in water and subsurface. ‘If you want a wind farm, you put it over there. If people want to go fishing, they go over there. You chop everything up into a nice marine spatial plan and everyone has their own little areas.’

Irish aquatech sector draws investors, but output remains stagnant (seafoodsource.com)

Dublin, Ireland-based aquaculture technology company NanobOx has received a new round of funding to help it bring its innovative oxygenation technology to market and kickstart the country’s stagnant domestic aquaculture sector.

The fresh round of funding comes after the company already secured Series A funding of EUR 900,000 (USD 972,000) from a consortium of venture capital investors who have bought into NanobOx’s energy-efficient method of oxygenating aquaculture ponds. Specifically, NanobOx uses a low-voltage electric field to generate nanobubbles fed directly into a farm’s water. The technology is currently undergoing trials at two Irish sites.

A Big Year on Legal Planet (legalplanet.org)

It’s an understatement to say that 2023 was a transformative year for the U.S. climate movement. We saw rapid implementation of landmark federal climate laws, a series of big actions on methane emissions, a deal on Colorado River water usage, and bigger-than-expected climate victories in Sacramento. EPA’s control of toxic chemicals was tested, the U.S. renewed talks with China (so did California’s governor), and young people won big in a first-of-its-kind climate trial. The backdrop was month after month of extreme weather that led to Earth’s warmest year on record.

American Blue Economy Podcast (coastalnewstoday.com)

In our final episode of the American Blue Economy Podcast, our host Rear Admiral, Tim Gallaudet, PhD, US Navy (ret)meets with his former NOAA colleagues in the Great Lakes to explore under-ice technology and how ecological and oil spill monitoring are important tools for the Blue Economy in the region. Joining him are Steve Ruberg, a research physical scientist focusing on winter AUV technology at NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL),Dr. Ashley Elgin, a research benthic ecologist also at GLERL, David Ruck, a documentary filmmaker formerly with NOAA and founder of Great Lakes Outreach Media. Together, they discuss how wintertime monitoring is an important but difficult component of GLERL’s long-time monitoring of the Great Lakes supporting recreation, fisheries, water quality, and more. Many thanks to our loyal listeners, and we wish you happy holidays, fair winds, and following seas in the years to come!

Capture the Future of Our Urban Ocean (dornsife.usc.edu)

USC Sea Grant’s Urban Tides Program invites individuals to visit the Southern California coast during extreme tide events and to take photos of the changing shoreline and any impacts on beaches or nearby communities. Extreme tides, particularly king tides, can help us identify current flooding hotspots and visualize what future sea level rise will look like for our coastline. Photos of these events help fill gaps in documenting coastal issues as well as identify areas of concern to assist in local planning and policy efforts.
