Business Incubator Begins Construction at AltaSea Campus

AltaSea, the marine science and innovation campus now taking shape at the Port of Los Angeles, started construction today on a new business incubator along the San Pedro waterfront.

The La Kretz Blue Economy Incubator, located at 2456 Signal Street, will repurpose Berth 58, an abandoned warehouse that stretches over one-third of a mile from end-to-end.  The AltaSea website describes the project as a center where the “scientific, business and education communities can connect and collaborate to develop solutions to coastal and ocean challenges.”

Entrepreneur and philanthropist Morton La Kretz provided substantial funding for the project, which follows similar investments in the La Kretz Innovation Campus in the Downtown Arts District, which is now home to the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator.

The Warehouse 58 restoration, designed by Gensler, is listed as one component of the first phase of the full AltaSea campus, which will eventually span 35 acres.  A full buildout is expected to occur over the course of 20 years.
