SUMMARY:

Under supervision of the Facilities Manager. Maintain the safety and security of our facilities during overnight hours. They will demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to ensuring a secure environment for all staff and tenants

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The list that follows is not intended to be comprehensive; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities of the position. Incumbents may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position- specific tasks.

  • Patrol the premises, including the wharf, docks, and building perimeters, to monitor for suspicious activity, security breaches, and unauthorized access.
  • Respond promptly to any security incidents, following established protocols to ensure safety.
  • Monitor and operate surveillance equipment, reviewing footage when necessary to identify potential security issues.
  • Ensure all gates, doors, and access points are securely locked.
  • Conduct routine checks of the facilities to identify potential hazards or maintenance needs and report findings to the Facilities Manager.
  • Log all security incidents, activities, and any observations made during shifts.
  • Maintain a visible presence on-site to deter unauthorized access and ensure the safety of tenants and visitors.
  • Assist with access control, including greeting and verifying contractors during early morning hours.
  • Coordinate with local law enforcement or emergency services in case of significant incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with AltaSea’s security protocols and contribute to continual improvement of site safety measures.

PRIMARY INTERACTIONS:

  • AltaSea colleagues
  • May have periodic interaction with Tenants
  • Local Port Police as needed
  • Contractors and other various vendors

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to notice small signs of unusual activity or security breaches during patrols or while monitoring surveillance systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for clear interaction with tenants, visitors, emergency services, and reporting incidents.
  • Quick decision-making and critical thinking, especially when managing unexpected security incidents or emergencies.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and patrol large areas for extended periods, as well as respond physically to emergencies.
  • Ability to stay alert and vigilant throughout the night shift, proactively recognizing and addressing potential security threats.
  • Comfortable with operating security technology, including cameras, alarm systems, and mobile devices for incident logging and communication.
  • Skill in handling tense situations or disputes calmly and effectively, particularly when dealing with unauthorized individuals.
  • These knowledge areas and skills will help ensure the Night Security Officer can handle the various challenges of securing AltaSea’s facilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED (required).
  • Security Guard License (preferred).
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (preferred but not required).
  • Additional training or coursework in security, law enforcement, or a related field (preferred).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed at the AltaSea campus in San Pedro
  • The position involves working evenings
  • Lots of walking in large ocean front campus

Competitive salary range: $18.20-$20.70 per hour and commensurate with experience; benefits include paid vacation, medical/dental/vision insurance, life and long-term disability insurance.
