AltaSea Community Spotlight
AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, the world’s largest ocean research and development destination for the Blue Economy, hosted Republic of Croatia Prime Minister Andrej Plenković for a tour of the 35-acre campus dedicated to climate and sustainability solutions from the ocean. This is the first visit by a head of state to AltaSea in the organization’s history.

Gaurav Sant, who helped found Equatic, and Kat Taylor, cofounder and board chair of Beneficial State Bank, were named as Sustainability Leaders by Forbes. This is the first time the magazine has honored sustainability leaders, and famed oceanographer Sylvia Earle, who has been involved and honored at AltaSea’s Blue Hours, was on the panel that helped determine the list.

AltaSea’s partner Kelp Ark, a nonprofit building seed banks of kelp to support restoration, farming, and research, recently featured an immersive container with sculptural photographic panels and augmented reality components in collaboration with artist Taiji Terasaki for Blue Hour.

According to the terms of the agreement, I-Ke will be providing the full financing for the 100KW pilot project, by buying a turnkey conversion unit from Eco Wave Power. This conversion unit for the 100KW wave energy power station includes all the hydraulic and electric conversion parts, coupled with the smart control and automation system.

Marine Science
A team of NASA rocket scientists is developing autonomous underwater robots able to go where humans cannot, deep beneath Antarctica’s giant ice shelves. The robots’ task is to better understand how rapidly ice is melting — and how quickly that could cause catastrophic sea level rise.

University of Maryland scientists uncovered evidence of an ancient seafloor that sank deep into Earth during the age of dinosaurs, challenging existing theories about Earth’s interior structure. Located on the floor of the southeastern Pacific Ocean, this previously unstudied patch of seafloor sheds new light on the inner workings of our planet and how its surface has changed over millions of years.
