HUB71 Welcomes 23 STARTUPS in its 13th cohort as ABU DHABI further solidifies its position as a global tech hub

Hub71, Abu Dhabi’s global tech ecosystem, has welcomed 23 new startups as part of its latest cohort, having collectively raised over $53 million in funding. Following a rigorous selection process, the successful startups will enter Hub71’s new Company Building Program and benefit from up to AED 250,000 worth of in-kind incentives and AED 250,000 in cash for equity.

One of the startups selected is Aquaai, a software and hardware service company delivering data from waterways using 3D-printed, bio-inspired fishlike drones and its U.S. home is AltaSea.

OCEANIKA et la Menace cachée des DCP : La technologie au Service de la Conservation

The sparkling waters of the Seychelles harbour a considerable ecological challenge. In less than 8 days,
a new observation mission by the Seychellois NGO Oceanika discovered 17 drifting Fish Aggregating
Devices (FADs) on the Amirantes plateau, caught in our coral reefs at depths of up to 35 meters, asthey
are all equipped with a long line of over 60 meters and an anchor. OCEANIKA and its divers have once
again retrieved all the FADs, collected the required scientific data, and brought them back to Victoria
where they are sorted to be either recycled or disposed of. Although this number is startling, it is the
overall panorama of FADs beaching that the NGO wishes to bring to everyone’s attention.

Equinor and Captura partner to develop ocean carbon removal

The Kårstø plant will be the final system in Captura’s pilot and scale-up program and is designed to demonstrate the technology’s readiness for commercial deployment. It follows a one-ton-per-year system that commenced operations at Newport Beach, California in August 2022, and a 100-ton-per-year system that was recently installed at AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles.

Time picks UCLA Engineering climate solution as one of 2023’s top inventions

Time magazine has named the carbon-removal Equatic process developed at UCLA’s Institute for Carbon Management one of the best inventions of 2023 in the sustainability category.

Formerly known as Project SeaChange, the Equatic technology was created by a team of researchers at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering. The process accelerates and expands the ocean’s natural ability to absorb carbon dioxide to remove atmospheric CO2, storing it in the forms of solid minerals and aqueous species for more than 10,000 years while producing carbon-negative hydrogen — a clean fuel for transport and industrial applications.

Ghoulish Footballfish makes rare appearance on Orange County beach- on Friday the 13th

Officials from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife identified the aquatic creature as being a Pacific footballfish, one of 200 species of anglerfish worldwide.

“There are only approximately 30 or so specimens that have been collected of this species globally, which makes this find valuable and may add to what is known about their life history,” Horeczko said in an email.

On the clear and salty evening of October 14, Alta Sea hosted their annual fundraiser at the San Pedro docks in an impeccably decorated Berth 57, with its 60,000 square foot warehouse situated on the Alta Sea campus. A film was screened about the importance of our oceans for the health of our planet, and the potential of energy from waves. The film includes appearances by naturalist Jane Goodall, and Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson. An art collection curated by Kim Abeles featured ceramics, video, glass, photography, sound, and paintings by over 20 artists.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year: Horseshoe crab wins gold (Yahoo)

A picture of a mysterious and other-worldly horseshoe crab has earned Laurent Ballesta the title of Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPY) 2023.

The golden marine arthropod is seen hugging the bottom muds in waters off Pangatalan Island, in the Philippines.

It is tracked by three small fish, hoping the crab’s movements will expose an opportunistic meal in the sediment.

Ballesta becomes only the second photographer in WPY’s 59-year history to win the competition twice.

USGS scientists shade corals in emergency rescue effort amidst unprecedented ocean temperatures (usgs.gov)

Coral reefs are a critical natural resource providing coastal communities protection from storms by helping dissipate wave energy. Corals also provide shelter for many marine species.

Three USGS scientists from the St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center traveled to Dry Tortugas National Park August 13 to erect temporary shade structures in hopes they would lessen the effect of the sun’s rays and help the corals survive until the fall, when water temperatures traditionally drop. When experts arrived at the park, they found much of the corals had lost their color: they were bleached.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the winners of the inaugural Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Clean Energy Education Prize Inspire Track.

The winning HBCU teams will each receive $40,000 to support the development or enhancement of clean energy-focused summer programs for K-12 and community college students.

This prize supports President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative, which aims to direct 40% of the overall benefits of certain federal investments to disadvantaged communities by building a diverse STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) pipeline to support America’s clean energy future.
