John Molina Named to AltaSea’s Board of Trustees (AltaSea)

AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, the world’s largest ocean research and development destination for the Blue Economy, is proud to announce that Los Angeles businessman and philanthropist John Molina has joined the AltaSea Board of Trustees, effective January 2024. Molina has been involved with AltaSea for the past five years as the founder of Pacific6 Enterprises that docks its one-of-a-kind aquaculture vessel at AltaSea.

Los Angeles Yacht Club’s Mission to Bring Diverse Populations into Sailing (AltaSea)

The Los Angeles Yacht Club (LAYC) runs various sailing programs and races, all overseen by a CEO known as the commodore, who is elected annually from the club’s ranks. In the LAYC’s one hundred and twenty-plus year history, there have only been three female commodores, including the organization’s current leader, Kelly Marie.

New Public Waterfront Area Opens Near LA Port (Patch.com)

As part of an effort to create new public waterfront access, officials on Saturday opened the $77.3 million Wilmington Waterfront Promenade, a nine-acre “window on the waterfront” near the Port of Los Angeles.

The project is located along the water’s edge of berths 183- 186 and adjacent to Banning’s Landing Community Center.

Touring Ocean-based Carbon Removal with the California Legislature (oceansciencetrust.org)

From lab-based research in the Bay Area to in-water field testing off the Port of Los Angeles, a number of projects have branched out of California’s academic and scientific institutions in recent years aiming to harness the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In the midst of this growth, Ocean Science Trust conducted a series of educational tours with the California Legislature toward the end of 2023 to explore these projects and examine the potential role of ocean-based or marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR).

In traditional surfboard manufacturing, there is approximately double the finished surfboard’s weight in waste (or trash) generated in the production process. This consists of materials from offcuts of fiberglass cloth or tech materials like basalt patches, tape, resin, gloves, stir sticks, foam dust, sandpaper, and more.

So, they’ve been developing the surfboard industry’s first Circular Manufacturing system to close the loop on production waste! In early 2018 Ryan launched our ZERO WASTE INITIATIVE. Waste streams from all production rooms are categorized, then sorted. Eps blank offcuts are sent directly to Marko Foam where they are recycled. The rest of the manufacturing waste was upcycled and recycled into sustainable lifestyle products.

Scientists have mapped the largest coral reef deep in the ocean, stretching hundreds of miles off the U.S. Atlantic coast.

While researchers have known since the 1960s that some coral were present off the Atlantic, the reef’s size remained a mystery until new underwater mapping technology made it possible to construct 3D images of the ocean floor.

The largest yet known deep coral reef “has been right under our noses, waiting to be discovered,” said Derek Sowers, an oceanographer at the nonprofit Ocean Exploration Trust.

Blue Economy Index (uncw.edu)

This index is the first of its kind in measuring the economic activities in oceans and waterways with a tilt towards their environmental impact. This gives investors access to the growing impact of economic development around the oceans as there continues to be a population shift toward coastal communities.

The collaboration between UNCW’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE), CIE’s Alliance for the Blue Economy, UNCW’s Cameron School of Business and FactSet, a financial industry data and software company brought together academics, science, and business to create a unique product that brings awareness to a global concern about ocean preservation and economic development.

eeBLUE Aquaculture Literacy Mini Grants Program Information (naaee.org)

The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) is pleased to offer your organization the opportunity to apply for an Aquaculture Literacy Mini-Grant. Through this mini-grants program, NAAEE supports partnerships sharing the mutual aquaculture literacy goals of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Education, NOAA Fisheries, and the National Sea Grant Office. These mini-grants will provide informal learning institutions (e.g., aquariums), aquaculture industry (e.g., shellfish, finfish, and seaweed farmers), and NOAA partners with support for the co-development of innovative educational experiences that explore aquaculture topics. Successful proposals will use the unique education mission of the eeBLUE partnership—a collaboration between NAAEE and NOAA’s Office of Education—as a context for engagement and advancement of public aquaculture literacy.

A new program at the University of Maine funded by a $750,000 grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture aims to address education gaps and meet workforce needs in the aquaculture industry.
