Microfiber Reduction in California (5gyres.org)
A single load of laundry can release up to 18 million microfibers. 5 Gyres is co-sponsoring AB 1628 (McKinnor), which would require new washing machines in California to contain a microfiber filtration system by 2029. Our own research shows that filters are a proven solution that can dramatically reduce the amount of microfibers entering the environment.

Perspective – Our Future is Blue – Nonprofit AltaSea Taps Ocean Resources to Solve Eco-Challenges (SouthBayCities.org)
Two-thirds of our planet is covered by oceans, so when we look for solutions to climate change and sustainability challenges, why would we only look on land? The nonprofit AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles has developed a model to unleash the power of the ocean to meet these challenges by harnessing the “blue” economy. This includes aquaculture on land and at sea; clean renewable energy, such as wave power and pulling carbon pollution out of the ocean, with hydrogen as a byproduct that can power ships and trucks; and underwater robotics that can help us explore and understand our changing ocean to unlock even more innovation.

AltaSea, Kearny Point launch collaborative effort to promote sustainability, blue and green economy (ROI-NJ.com)
Kearny Point, together with AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, joined to launch an initiative aimed at promoting sustainability, aquaculture and the blue and green economy. The bicoastal collaboration, which brings together two leading innovation hubs, will leverage the unique capabilities of each organization to drive innovation and growth on both the East and West coasts.
As part of the initiative, AltaSea and Kearny Point will collaborate to take advantage of Kearny Point’s strategic infrastructure located close to the Port of Newark and New York City. One of AltaSea’s greatest advantages is its access to the deep ocean, vast research facilities and marine life support systems.

Why finding kelp in the Galapagos is like finding a polar bear in the Bahamas (NPR.org)
When Salomé Buglass was studying underwater mountains in the Galapagos, the marine scientist came across something she didn’t expect. “I see these tall, green things just swaying from one side to the other,” Salomé recalls. “I thought, is this like some weird black coral that is really flappy?”
She eventually realized it was a forest of kelp thriving in deep, tropical waters. Kelp usually grows in cooler waters, and like other seaweeds, needs light to survive. To add to the mystery, this kelp was growing deeper than usual, farther away from the sun’s rays.
Salomé had a ton of questions. “How is it so deep? What is it doing on top of a seamount? Why haven’t we seen it before?” and eventually “Is this a whole new species?”

Ocean temperatures are off the charts, and El Niño is only partly to blame (LATimes.com)
In a world of worsening climate extremes, a single red line has caught many people’s attention.
The line, which charts sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic Ocean, went viral over the weekend for its startling display of unprecedented warming — nearly 2 degrees (1.09 Celsius) above the mean dating back to 1982, the earliest year with comparable data.
Ocean temperatures are so anomalously high that Eliot Jacobson, a retired mathematics professor who created the graph using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, had to “increase the upper bound on the y-axis,” he said.

Viable Gear Founder Katie Weiler talks about lobster bait bags, kelp seeding lines and more with the Advocate and Aquademia (globalseafood.org)
Katie Weiler made a personal pledge once to rid her personal consumption habits of plastics. She was so devoted to the cause that she developed an Instagram page with tips for others on how to follow suit.
“People would see me at the grocery store, trying to get people to wrap cheese in paper for me or bringing my own containers and stuff like that. And that’s really where I started diving super deep into plastics,” said the founder of Viable Gear, a Maine-based startup aiming to reduce petroleum-based plastics in the ocean by offering fishing and aquaculture equipment made with a polymer derived from seaweed. Weiler joined the Advocate and the Aquademia podcast this week.

Uganda gains first aquaculture feed mill (Feedstrategy.com)
Ground has been broken on the Uganda’s first feed mill dedicated to feed production for fish farming. For the landlocked East African state, this represents its first facility exclusively for aquaculture feed production.
This week, a ceremony marking the first stage of construction was held in Njeru, reports The Independent of Uganda. After recent feed mill investments in South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana and Ivory Coast, global animal feed company Royal De Heus was demonstrating its belief in the future for the continent of Africa.

UN Chief Urges Net Zero Emissions Agreement for Shipping by 2050 (marinelink.com)
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for agreement to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at crunch shipping talks in London this week and urged decarbonisation efforts to move faster.
China, however, is pushing back on the targets, according to a diplomatic note issued by Beijing.
Shipping, which transports around 90% of world trade and accounts for nearly 3% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, is facing calls from environmentalists and investors to deliver more concrete action, including a carbon levy.

New study led by UC Santa Barbara researcher shows environmental change threatens global aquaculture (kclu.org)
It’s a source of beauty, and it’s also a vital source of food. Our oceans supply about 17% of the world’s protein. But, an international study led by a UC Santa Barbara researcher shows that environmental change may be creating an extraordinary threat to global aquaculture.
“We’ve been focusing on so-called blue foods, from freshwater and marine systems, trying to understand whether that food is at-risk in the future,” said Dr. Ben Halpern, who is one the lead authors of the new study. The UC Santa Barbara professor is Director of the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis.

OTEC and the Blue Economy: A Sustainable Path for Ocean-Based Industries (energyportal.eu)
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a promising technology that has the potential to revolutionize the way we harness energy from the ocean, paving the way for a sustainable blue economy. The blue economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of the ocean ecosystem. OTEC, which generates electricity by exploiting the temperature difference between warm surface seawater and cold deep seawater, can play a crucial role in the development of ocean-based industries, offering a clean and reliable source of energy.
The concept of OTEC has been around for over a century, but it is only in recent years that advances in technology have made it a viable option for large-scale energy production. The process involves pumping warm surface seawater through a heat exchanger, where it vaporizes a low-boiling-point fluid, such as ammonia. The vapor then drives a turbine, generating electricity. The vapor is subsequently condensed back into a liquid using cold deep seawater, and the cycle repeats. This continuous process allows for the production of electricity 24 hours a day, providing a stable and consistent energy supply.
