SUMMARY:From the Bay to the Border: Three of the Top Scientists in CA talk Ocean Innovation and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Join AltaSea for a webinar with three of the leading scientists in the field of ocean innovation and conservation. The webinar will focus on the impacts that climate change is having on the ocean and marine mammals\, and the innovations that are leading the 21st century approach to find solutions.  More information coming soon! \nPanelists\nDr. Jennifer Smith is a professor in marine ecology and conservation in the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.   Smith’s research focuses on understanding the factors that influence community structure in marine ecosystems. Her research often goes beyond basic ecology by integrating conservation\, restoration\, management\, and sustainability. \nDr. Sarah Purkey is an assistant professor of climate and atmospheric science and physical oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. As an oceanographer\, her research is focused on quantifying temperature\, salinity\, and circulation changes in the global ocean\, including the deep and abyssal layers – the regions of the ocean that are difficult to access with current technology. Much of her current research is focused on explaining the causes of deep warming\, and advancing data collection and measurement in the global ocean. \nDr. Cara Field is the medical director at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito\, the world’s largest marine mammal hospital. Dr. Field earned the status of Diplomate with a specialization in aquatic marine medicine – one of only 30 veterinarians in the nation to earn that distinction. Her work is focused on managing the care and health of the Center’s marine mammal patients\, spearheading numerous research projects\, and teaching and mentoring the next generation of veterinarians and marine scientists. \nModerator\nModerating the November 13 webinar will be the multi-Emmy award-winning journalist\, Val Zavala. Zavala spent 30 years as a broadcast journalist at KCET in Los Angeles\, winning numerous journalism awards. During her career\, Zavala has covered a broad spectrum of Southern California issues\, including politics\, the environment\, and the economy.

SUMMARY:Video Chat with Amber Becerra
DESCRIPTION:“How Does Pollution Affect Our Oceans?: A deep dive into trash\, animal entanglement\, and what you can do about it.” \nFriday\, November 20 at 12:00pm \nClick here to register. \n\nAmber Becerra joined the Board of the Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) in November of 2019 with the intention of helping with fundraising because she has a passion for animals. Little did she know what was in store for her in just a few short weeks. Once elected as President in December of 2019\, Amber threw herself headfirst into learning everything there is to know about MMCC and reorganizing and fine-tuning the center with an eye toward long term sustainability. \n\nAmber’s background in environmental programs in law school and as the Executive Director and Founder of a Berkeley Law alumni organization has proved to be an invaluable experience that paved the way for her success in this role. Her experience with a multitude of organizations as an attorney and now as the CEO of a real estate development company gives her the business acumen that is necessary to make appropriate budget cuts and financial projections to extend the viability of MMCC until stability can be achieved. \n\nShe is thrilled to be on this adventure with her fellow Board members as they strive to take MMCC to new heights.

SUMMARY:Blue + Green Session 1: What is Regenerative Aquaculture?
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, May 6th\, 4:00 PM \nTo register\, click here. \nSponsors: \n \nSpeakers: \nJanet E. Kübler\, Ph.D.\, Biology Department\, California State University Northridge \nJanet Kübler is a marine biologist with decades of experience working with seaweeds. My research program has two main currents. One addresses climate change and disturbance effects on primary producers\, focusing on scope for resilience. Working at the interface of the biotic and abiotic\, this research addresses how biogeochemical effects on algae and aquatic plants can emerge in ecosystem level patterns. The other employs the complex life cycles\, common in algae\, to test hypotheses about relative adaptive advantages and ecological consequences of reproductive patterns. I also explore the transfer of biological knowledge to applications through biologically inspired design collaborations and regenerative aquaculture. \nFinian Makepeace\, Co-founder\, Policy Director & Lead Educator\, Kiss the Ground \nFinian Makepeace is the co-founder of Kiss the Ground and a renowned presenter\, media creator\, and thought leader in the field of regenerative agriculture and soil health. His dedication to Kiss the Ground’s mission of “inspiring participation in global regeneration\, starting with soil”\, has motivated him to develop training programs\, workshops\, and talks designed to empower people around the world to become confident advocates for this growing movement. https://kisstheground.com/ \nCharles Yarish\, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, The University of Connecticut \nDr. Charlie Yarish is an extensively published\, award-winning Professor Emeritus at the University of Connecticut (UCONN). Among his many achievements\, he is credited for his involvement in developing the global and North American seaweed aquaculture industries and establishing the internationally recognized Seaweed Marine Biotechnology Laboratory at UCONN. \nCharlie spent years studying why seaweeds occur where they occur\, including how light\, temperature\, salinity\, and nutrients impact seaweed physiology. In the 1980s\, Charlie collaborated with a multi-national group of scientists and engineers to develop and define multispecies ocean farming or Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture (IMTA)\, which we now call regenerative ocean farming. In 1992\, Charlie organized a team of scientists in New England to study the red seaweed called nori. They found vast differences in physiology\, cytology and the DNA of the nori in the U.S\, which lead to many publications on the aquaculture of nori. In 2010\, his colleagues published a paper that ultimately spearheaded the effort to revise the genus of Porphyra (also known as nori) into 147 different species in up to 11 different genera. https://eeb.uconn.edu/ \nModerator: \nVal Zavala  \nVal Zavala was anchor and executive producer of “SoCal Connected” until her retirement in 2018.
