SUMMARY:AltaSea Open House: ReUp Our Ocean
DESCRIPTION:ReUp Our Ocean campaign is turning plastic pollution into surfboard fins and other upcycled sustainable products.\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday 31\, 2026\, for an exciting Open House event at AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles!\nJoin us for AltaSea’s first Open House of 2026\, centered on the power of recycling and ocean stewardship through the ReUp Campaign. This special edition will feature Ryan Harris\, surfboard shaper and sustainability innovator\, who is transforming trash collected from the ocean into functional surfboard fins for boards he upcycles. \nLearn how Ryan’s hands-on approach turns waste he encounters while surfing into high-performance surf components—demonstrating how recycling and creative reuse can directly protect our ocean playground. This event highlights practical solutions\, circular design\, and the role individuals and communities can play in reducing marine debris. \nWhether you’re an ocean advocate\, student\, educator\, or curious about recycling innovation\, this open house offers an inspiring look at trash reimagined. \nRyan Harris grew up in Oregon where surfing required dedication fueled by passion. When he moved to Southern California\, he fell in love with the sacred craft of board shaping\, a natural extension of his artistic background. While working in a traditional poly glass shop\, he met Rey Banatao from Entropy Bio Resins. Rey opened Ryan’s eyes to greener methods of making surfboards. Within a year Ryan was one of the leaders of green board building. \nIn early 2018 Ry launched the Zero Waste Initiative\, another industry first. Just like the Surfboard Industry the Zero Waste system is constantly evolving and he looks forward to the growing list of upcycled sustainable products we can make in it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n33 billion pounds of plastic trash ends up in our ocean every year! That’s two garbage truck loads full\, every minute. \nRyan developed a way to #upcycle one of the worst and most widely spread single use plastics that is littering our beaches and oceans: plastic straws!!!! (And other Ocean Bound Plastic trash and plastic trash I’ve fished out of the ocean) \nIt’s a game changer. \n  \n\nRSVP HERE

SUMMARY:The Women of Boeing: Innovation In The Deep Sea
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Boeings’ Meghan Guerrero\, Cheryl Hussong\, and Pryscila Verduzco \n \nMeghan Guerrero is a Boeing Systems and Integration Engineer for the Extra-Large Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (XLUUV) program in Huntington Beach\, CA. She began her career as a support diver for Echo Voyager At-Sea Testing and currently serves as their vehicle operator\, mission planner\, and at sea Test Director. Meghan attended both Esperanza and Yorba Linda High School and continued her education at Fort Lewis College in Durango\, Colorado studying Engineering. She participated in various humanitarian projects in southeast Asia’s Myanmar implementing gravity fed water systems to rural communities lacking safe drinking water and concluded her undergraduate degree leading an independent trip to Myanmar with a team of community partners and senior engineering students. After graduating college\, Meghan earned her Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver Certifications through Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI). Meghan’s field work with Boeing involves several continuous weeks of living and working aboard a 120ft support ship in remote areas off the coast of California. A team of 12-15 crew members eat\, sleep\, and work together to monitor and maintain their XLUUV while it operates under the ocean surface twenty-four hours per day. \n \nCheryl Hussong is a Senior Engineering Manager at the Boeing Company\, supporting the Boeing Defense Systems (BDS) Autonomous Systems division.  Cheryl has a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science from the University of California at Irvine (UCI) and a Master of Science (MS) degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California (USC).  Cheryl started her career as a software engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company\, now Raytheon Company\, working on several Air Traffic Control systems.  After 10 years at the Raytheon Company\, she moved to Rockwell Collins and managed In-flight Entertainment systems for several airlines.  Cheryl left Rockwell Collins after 5 years and has been working at the Boeing Company as an Engineering Manager supporting military communication programs and currently unmanned underwater vehicle programs.  Cheryl has been married to her husband\, Matthew\, for 28 years and they have 2 sons in college. \n \nPryscila Verduzco is Test & Evaluation Engineer at the Boeing Company. Holding a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Cal Poly Pomona\, I have worked in the defense industry working on projects that help protect our nation since 2012. I started my career at Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and was there for 5.5yrs assessing\, calibrating\, designing\, and testing various weapons systems and the bigger structures they support. I then transitioned to my current position at Boeing\, where I design\, integrate\, and test the next generation of unmanned underwater vehicles. I’ve also been fortunate enough to collaborate with Boeing and Discovery Education on the FutureU program\, which brings hands-on and virtual STEM activities to K12 schools (including an Echo Voyager VR experience!).

SUMMARY:Discovery Lecture Series - August 5
DESCRIPTION:John Calambokidis\, Research Biologist\, Cascadia Research \nThe amazing underwater world of blue and humpback whales: new tags provide insights into their lives and the threats they face \nJohn Calambokidis of Cascadia Research has studied blue and humpback whales off California for 30 years. Starting with photographic identification of individual whales that now allows Cascadia to track most of the animals that feed off the US West Coast. More recently he has been using various types of tags to open up the underwater world of these animals. This has included video cameras that provide unique views of how these animals feed and interact underwater. These tags have also become powerful new tools for examining the threats whales face off California allowing an examination of how they respond to Navy sonar or the close approach of ships. The talk will trace some of the evolution of this research\, the new insights it is providing into the underwater lives of whales\, and will include some unique underwater videos of whales. \nJohn Calambokidis is a Senior Research Biologist and one of the founders of Cascadia Research Collective\, a non-profit research organization formed in 1979 based in Olympia\, Washington. He periodically (1991-2013) serves as an Adjunct Faculty at the Evergreen State College teaching a course on marine mammals. His primary interests are the biology of marine mammals and the impacts of humans. He has served as Project Director of over 100 projects. He has authored two books on marine mammals (on blue whales and a guide to marine mammals) as well as more than 150 publications in scientific journals and technical reports.

SUMMARY:Discovery Lecture Series - February 5
DESCRIPTION:The Vast Frontier: Tales From the Darkside\n Presented by Mike Schaadt\, Director of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium \n\nThe ocean provides 99% of the living space on our planet and most of it is hundreds of feet of water column in the open oc \nean. Virtually every taxonomic group on earth has a representative that lives in this vast living space. Scientific studies of this important area of our planet are woefully lacking. What we do know is helping us determine what actions people can take to keep the oceans healthy. \nMike Schaadt\, a life-long Southern Californian\, is Director of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (CMA). He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology and a Master’s degree in Biology from CSU Long Beach. Mike has been involved in formal and informal marine science education for more than 35 years. Mike has taught biology at local community colleges and brings to his job a strong background in science education. He has authored or co-authored over a dozen journal publications/book chapters and three books. He has a keen interest in finding novel ways to motivate people to learn about and care for the oceans. His research interest is the natural history of plankton with special emphasis on deepsea forms. \nClick here for teacher resources related to this lecture. \nPlease RSVP to: lecture@cmaqua.org
