DESCRIPTION:Dr. Clarissa Anderson is a biological oceanographer with expertise in ecological forecasting and remote sensing. After receiving a B.A. in Biology and Art History at UC Berkeley and a Marine Science Ph.D. at UC Santa Barbara\, she completed several postdoctoral appointments before transitioning into a professional research position at UC Santa Cruz. The majority of her research has focused on the prediction of harmful algal blooms and toxins in estuarine and coastal ecosystems as well as the fate and transport of harmful toxins to deeper waters and sediments. During her time as research faculty at UC Santa Cruz\, she worked to establish the California Harmful Algae Risk Mapping (C-HARM) system with NASA Applied Science support. \nShe is now at Scripps Institution of Oceanography directing the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS) and continuing to conduct research on phytoplankton ecology in coastal California. DESCRIPTION:Join AltaSea for a webinar with 3 PhD candidates from UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography: Laura Lilly\, Camille Pagniello\, and Sarah Maher. \nPanelists\n\nLaura Lilly is a 6th-year Ph.D. candidate in Biological Oceanography in Mark Ohman’s lab at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Her research focuses on how El Niño events impact the zooplankton community off California. She is a sea-going oceanographer with a long history of spending time on boats at sea\, including several month-long sailing trips across the Equatorial Pacific. Laura is passionate about sustainability and conservation and has served for the past four years as a co-founder and co-leader of the Scripps Sustainability Group\, which aims to bring more sustainable practices to Scripps and UCSD. She believes strongly in the value of scientific education and outreach\, and has developed and taught short “Introduction to Oceanography” programs for several high schools around San Diego County. In addition to oceanography\, Laura loves to play horse polo\, surf in Baja California\, photograph waves\, run\, and learn new languages. \n \nSarah Maher received a BSc. in physics and astronomy at the University of Victoria in Canada and a MS in geology and geophysics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa where she worked on plate tectonic reconstructions. She is currently a 6th year earth science PhD student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography working with Dr. Jeffrey Gee. \nSarah’s present research focuses on using magnetic techniques to examine how the ocean crust cools. This involved a 35 day cruise to Pito Deep off the coast of Easter Island where she collected magnetic and bathymetry data and rock samples. Sarah also helped to design a 10 day cruise to the Fieberling seamount chain as a co-chief scientist\, allowing graduate students to learn geoscience methods at sea. \n \nCamille Pagniello is a sixth-year PhD student majoring in Applied Ocean Sciences at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Pagniello considers herself to be somewhat of an ocean “MacGyver” – part marine biologist\, part physicist\, part engineer. Her research interests lie at the intersection of acoustics and geophysics\, robotics\, marine animals\, and sustainable management of natural resources. She is currently using passive acoustics and optical imaging to identify the sounds of commercially and recreationally important fish species and to locate their spawning areas. \nCamille has spent over 80 days at sea\, including time as Chief Scientist of the Kelp Acoustic Propagation Experiment (APE)\, an experiment that she proposed and designed as a graduate student to study the influence of kelp on low-frequency sound propagation. Her ultimate goal is to contribute to the basic scientific understanding of the biological and physical processes in the ocean to further ocean conservation efforts. \nBefore attending Scripps\, Pagniello completed her BSc Honors Co-op in Marine Biology and Physics with minors in Mathematics and Ocean Sciences at Dalhousie University in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, Canada. DESCRIPTION:John Calambokidis\, Research Biologist\, Cascadia Research \nThe amazing underwater world of blue and humpback whales: new tags provide insights into their lives and the threats they face \nJohn Calambokidis of Cascadia Research has studied blue and humpback whales off California for 30 years. Starting with photographic identification of individual whales that now allows Cascadia to track most of the animals that feed off the US West Coast. More recently he has been using various types of tags to open up the underwater world of these animals. This has included video cameras that provide unique views of how these animals feed and interact underwater. These tags have also become powerful new tools for examining the threats whales face off California allowing an examination of how they respond to Navy sonar or the close approach of ships. The talk will trace some of the evolution of this research\, the new insights it is providing into the underwater lives of whales\, and will include some unique underwater videos of whales. \nJohn Calambokidis is a Senior Research Biologist and one of the founders of Cascadia Research Collective\, a non-profit research organization formed in 1979 based in Olympia\, Washington. He periodically (1991-2013) serves as an Adjunct Faculty at the Evergreen State College teaching a course on marine mammals. His primary interests are the biology of marine mammals and the impacts of humans. He has served as Project Director of over 100 projects. He has authored two books on marine mammals (on blue whales and a guide to marine mammals) as well as more than 150 publications in scientific journals and technical reports.

Virtually every taxonomic group on earth has a representative that lives in this vast living space. Scientific studies of this important area of our planet are woefully lacking. What we do know is helping us determine what actions people can take to keep the oceans healthy. \nMike Schaadt\, a life-long Southern Californian\, is Director of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (CMA). He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology and a Master’s degree in Biology from CSU Long Beach. Mike has been involved in formal and informal marine science education for more than 35 years. Mike has taught biology at local community colleges and brings to his job a strong background in science education. He has authored or co-authored over a dozen journal publications/book chapters and three books. He has a keen interest in finding novel ways to motivate people to learn about and care for the oceans.
